A large, wide-canopied tree whose leaves fold at night and spread in the morning. Commonly planted for shade in fields, it also supports orchids and provides young shoots as food for economically important insects like lac, as well as cattle, buffalo, pigs, goats, and sheep. Its leaves are rich in minerals and can be used for compost. Ripe pods are sweet and edible or can be fermented into alcohol. The dark brown to black wood has beautiful streaks, is strong and durable, ideal for construction, furniture, and farming tools, and polishes to a lovely sheen.
